Lessons from Plants Book Cover

A redesign of the cover of Beronda Montgomery’s Lessons from Plants, utilizing the Cricut machine to create more texture and character

For this project, I was asked to redesign a cover of a book using physical means to add greater depth to the subject matter. I decided to redesign the cover of Beronda Montgomery’s Lessons from Plants and to make a collage-like, yet cleanly-designed layered composition. I wanted to use textures from the natural world, including different types of soil and leaves, to add texture and better connect to the subject of the book.

I first created a mockup of the final design in Adobe Illustrator (first image above) using public domain images of plant and soil textures. Next, I printed the photographs of these natural textures to the appropriate scale and utilized the Cricut machine to create out cut each letterform and shape from the printed materials. I then glued all of the pieces together to form a physical version of the cover and photographed it (second image above). I brought the image into Adobe Photoshop to adjust lighting and do various touch-ups, then exported the image and brought it into InDesign. Here, I added the non-Cricut text onto the composition and finalized the design.
